New Ms Fit Feature on Shopping for Good Guru, Christena Reinhard
As if I needed one more reason to love the American Heart Association...I got it.. and it came in the form of Union & Fifth co-founder, Christena Reinhard. Earlier this month, I attended a fashion show prep-session for the Faces of Heart fashion show coming to Boston this October. The models, all heart and stroke survivors, were style by Christena with her racks of designer clothes all donated to her amazing company Union & Fifth. Union & Fifth raises money for charities by selling donated designer items. This is fundraising at its most fabulous! And to boot, you can even choose the charity you want to donate to, and it's beyond easy! Union & Fifth sends you a pre-paid postage kit that you can drop items into, and send them off to start raising money for your preferred charity. How awesome?!
A STYLIST'S NOTE~
We thought this would be the perfect time to tell you about this unique company as fall is approaching. As a personal stylist, one of the main things that I do with my clients' closets, especially at the beginning of a new season, is take out all the old and unworn, which usually (and thankfully) leads to a mountain of clothes that we donate. Yes, it's hard to part with your "favorite shirt that you wore on your 3rd date with your then boyfriend." But making room in your closet from a zen point of view as well as giving yourself room for new pieces is something I encourage all of my clients to do. I love the concept of donating rather than throwing away because I am a huge believer in giving, giving, giving! Something that's been buried in your closet for years that you may deem "not my style anymore," could be a healthy donation to a wonderful charity with Union & Fifth. With all the fall trends taking over right now, this is the best time to go through your closet, make some room for the new pieces we all know you're going to buy and check out this incredible company!
Thank you so much Christena for sharing with Ms Fit For Society!
WHAT IS KEEPING YOU BUSY THESE DAYS?
While I will admit to working a lot of hours and mostly really early ones at that, I do try to be good about also doing things I love! I have 2 old english sheepdogs (London & Zeppelin) and we go out for between 3-5 miles every morning, rain or shine! They come to work with me at the warehouse, so it's best to get their energy out. I am an avid cook, and do all my cooking and prep for the week on the weekend – there is nothing worse than “what's for dinner?” and not knowing. Plus, my husband is training for his 5th full-course Ironman Triathlon, so that takes a ton of coordination (and calories). And of course, I do love to shop.
WHAT ARE YOU LOVING IN FITNESS AND FASHION RIGHT NOW?
I think it's really fun that the two have intersected they way that they have – I live in California, so we have a really relaxed style anyway.
I love that I can wear such fun clothes while working out – style is super important to me – right now I think that Athleta’s Dobby Free Knicker with the iPhone pocket is really great from a functional standpoint, but also, their patterns are phenomenally fun! I just ordered their new Capri 2.0s in floral and am kicking myself for not getting on the Derek Lam collaboration train in time – Russian Rule of shopping: Buy it when you see it so you don’t miss out! And I think that “dressy sneakers” can be worn with almost anything – I have been known to wear a ball skirt and sneakers at our warehouse.
So while I am not a fan of Yoga pants all day long for everything, I do love that you have options (have you seen the Yoga Smoga reversible pullovers? Im waiting for those to go on sale.) Also, on our trip to Vancouver last year, the LuLu Lab was a must shop for me – I picked up some great street clothes with fitness fabrics. Black of course.
WE ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE CONCEPT BEHIND YOUR BUSINESS, CAN YOU PLEASE SHARE WITH US WHAT UNION & FIFTH IS AND THE INSPIRATION ON HOW YOU GOT STARTED?
In 2012 I cleaned out a donor’s closet, sold the contents and raised $40,000 – you can say that was the Ah-ha-Moment! We launched Union & Fifth to raise money for charity by reselling donated designer clothes, shoes and accessories on our site – so for your readers who love a bargain, you can find Armani for $49.00, Chanel for under $200 and great contemporary brands like Rag & Bone for 90% off retail and you know that your purchase is supporting a great cause.
HOW CAN WE DONATE TO UNION & FIFTH?
For those who want to support a charity, anyone can clean out for any cause by simply going on the site, clicking donate and we will send you a postage paid clean out kit – it's really that easy! The American Heart Association is a great example of a charity that women can clean out in support of – I generally ask women to think about what is in their closet - I bet you have a pair of shoes that hurt your feet, a skirt that is a little too short or a dress that hangs a little wrong – we would love to help you turn even one item into cash for charity.
